Wood Furniture - Differentiating Outdoor and Indoor Pieces

There’s no questioning the popularity of wood furniture. Quite a lot of people would prefer wood for good reason.

Wood is first and foremost attractive and impressive. Even the lowest priced pieces can create striking impressions of elegance and comfort. Seeing wood in any room can make anyone feel right at home.

Wood can be used for both outdoor and indoor areas. This does not mean though that you can use any kind of wood furniture interchangeably for either setting. Wood for indoor use is very different in quality and appearance to that used for the outdoors. Prime wood like pine, cherry, red oak and maple are okay for indoor use. Pieces made from these wood types however often still have to undergo treatment to protect them against insect attacks, scratches, stains and sun exposure from open windows. Many pieces of indoor furniture now also come in a mixture of real wood, veneers and engineered wood.

Outdoor wood furniture is often sturdier than indoor pieces. This is only natural. Anything that you put outside your house is exposed to varying weather conditions, animals, pests, moisture, molds, mildew and different sources of stains. Hence, outdoor sets have to be made to withstand harsher circumstances.

One way to make sure that outdoor furniture lasts is to use outdoor specific wood types. Some common examples used for patio and garden sets are cypress, cedar, redwood and teak. These kinds of woods have innate qualities that naturally repel insects. These same qualities make them resistant to UV light, water, stains and scratches. Of all the wood types, teak is often the strongest and most durable. It can last for several decades even without extensive maintenance.

Some manufacturers may not provide special surface treatment for outdoor sets. Coating your furniture however with extra protective solutions is never a bad idea. To further preserve your set, you can also fit it with covers and clean it regularly.

Wood furniture always has the best look. If you want to put your best foot forward in your indoor and outdoor spaces though, you have to make sure that you have the right sets in place.
