Outdoor Furniture - Why the Material Matters

There are a variety of materials when it comes to outdoor furniture. For a lot of homeowners, material choices matter.

The material of your choice plays a role in defining your sense of style, keeping you within budget and ensuring comfort and durability. Here are some of the major options you can consider:

Wood

Wood is an all time favorite. It exhibits a sense of class while looking warm, inviting and naturally fit for the outdoors. Wood furniture that is specially treated for outdoor use is durable enough. Proper care and maintenance however is still necessary to prolong furniture life. The most durable wood material is teak which is why it is also quite expensive. Other wood options include cedar, oak and redwood.

Iron

This is the most durable material of all. Even so, protective powder coating may still be necessary for increased durability. When it comes to appearance, iron looks naturally elegant. The material however is understandably rigid and heavy. This is not the best option if you prefer to move furniture around and if comfort is a top priority.

Wicker

Wicker is sometimes placed under wood. Most pieces of wicker outdoor furniture however are made of woven synthetic rattan. Designs may not be as varied or attractive as those made of other materials but wicker is very comfortable and lightweight.

Plastic

This material has a lot of positive traits. It is lightweight, easy to clean and comfortable even without cushions. Plastic also comes in a variety of shades and is often the cheapest material type. The only downside to plastic is its lack of elegant appeal or visual attractiveness.

Aluminum

This is also a durable material and is often safe from rusting. It is cheaper and more lightweight than hardwood and iron. The material however can corrode if it is not properly treated or if surface treatment wears off through time. Many models are next to plastic in affordability.

You can’t just choose any outdoor furniture. It has to fit your preference and your requirements for comfort, durability and affordability. This is why it is important to make the right material choices.
