Basic Care
for Outdoor Furniture Cushions
Like patio furniture, outdoor furniture
cushions need to be cared for too.
No matter how well cushions are made to
withstand the elements, improper handling and care can ruin
your seat cushions. If you want to use and enjoy them longer,
you need to know how clean and maintain them.
Before anything else, you should make it a
point to choose the right cushions first. This will ensure that
maintaining them will be easier for you. Outdoor cushions
should have durable fabric that is resistant to water, stains
and sun exposure. As much as possible, cushions should be
marked machine washable or at least can be brushed so you don’t
have to labor too much over manual washing them. Cleaning will
also be easier if fabric covers and foams can be washed
separately.
If you have the right kind of cushions, you
can easily follow basic care procedures. First of all you
should know that no cushions are completely exempt from stains.
If you want to make sure that stains do not stick on your
outdoor furniture cushions, you should brush or wipe them as
soon as they form. Water and soap would be enough to get rid of
fresh stains.
On rainy or cold days, cushions can be
covered along with outdoor furniture. Avoid covering them with
plastic though since plastic can hold moisture in and lead to
mold formation. A better option is to take your cushions
indoors until the weather clears. During winter, you should
store cushions for the entire duration of the season.
Before storing cushions, make it a point to
wash them first. This will ensure that you are able to remove
all sorts of stains that can set permanently on the fabric
during its long period of storage. Make sure though that
cushions are dried properly before storage. Otherwise, they
could end up having molds. Cushions should also ideally be
washed before they are placed on furniture for spring or summer
use.
Outdoor furniture cushions are beautiful
accessories to have. You can make sure that they stay that way
by taking the right steps to preserve them. Follow these basic
cleaning tips for great looking cushions all year round.
